Maundy /ˈmɔ:ndɪ/n.(relig.) lavanda dei piedi ai poveri ( il giovedì santo)● (GB) Maundy money, NOTE DI CULTURA: Maundy money: sono monete d'argento appositamente coniate per essere donate dal sovrano ad anziani che abbiano dato un particolare contributo alla comunità, durante una cerimonia detta Royal Maundy, il Giovedì Santo. Il numero dei beneficiari corrisponde all'età del sovrano. Un tempo il sovrano lavava i piedi dei poveri ma questa tradizione non viene più rispettata dall'epoca di Giacomo II (1685-88). La parola maundy infatti deriva dal latino ‘mandatum’, incipit del verso 13, 34 del Vangelo di San Giovanni nel capitolo che racconta la lavanda dei piedi da parte di Gesù □ (relig.)
